2008 წლის 8 აგვისტოს დაწყებულ ომს წინ კონფლიქტის ზონაში უკიდურესად გამწვავებული ვითარება უძღოდა.
ინტენსიურად იბომბებოდა ქართული სოფლები, რასაც 7 აგვისტოს, გვიან ღამით საპასუხო ცეცხლი მოჰყვა.
როკის გვირაბიდან შემოსული რუსული 58-ე არმია 8 აგვისტოს დილით ცხინვალისკენ დაიძრა. ქართულმა სამხედრო შენაერთებმა, რომლებმაც ცხინვალში შესვლა მოახერხეს, რუსული ავიაციის შეტევის გამო უკან დაიხიეს.
დაიბომბა გორი, რუსულმა ბომბდამშენებმა იერიში მიიტანეს ფოთის ნავსადგურზე, სენაკის და მარნეულის სამხედრო ბაზებზე, ვაზიანის ბაზაზე, საავიაციო ქარხანასა და ქვიშიანის მთაზე მდებარე რადარზე.
ხუთდღიანი ომი ევროკავშირის თავმჯდომარე ქვეყნის პრეზიდენტის და საერთაშორისო საზოგადოების აქტიური ჩარევის შედეგად დასრულდა.
2008 წლის აგვისტოში გაფორმებული ცეცხლის შეწყვეტის შეთანხმება მოსკოვის მხრიდან დღემდე არ შესრულებულა.
