სოხუმის დაცემიდან 24 წელი გავიდა. საქართველოს ერთიანობისთვის ბრძოლაში დაღუპულ გმირთა მემორიალთან დილიდან ხალხმრავლობაა. დაღუპულებს იხსენებენ და პატივს მიაგებენ როგორც ოჯახის წევრები, ისე პოლიტიკოსები და რიგითი მოქალაქეები.
გმირთა მემორიალთან პრეზიდენტიც იმყოფებოდა. გიორგი მარგველაშვილმა სოხუმის მერს, გურამ გაბისკირიას, სიკვდილის შემდეგ, საქართველოს ეროვნული გმირის წოდება მიანიჭა.
პრეზიდენტმა ეროვნული ჯილდო გაბისკირიას ოჯახს გადასცა. 27 სექტემბერი უახლეს ისტორიაში ერთ-ერთი ყველაზე ტრაგიკული თარიღია.
სამხედრო დაპირისპირება აფხაზეთში 1992 წლის 14 აგვისტოს დაიწყო. ომი 13 თვე და 13 დღე გაგრძელდა და 1993 წლის 27 სექტემბერს, სოხუმის დაცემით დასრულდა.
